Office Tips: Blue Moon a Beta Fish with Personality

I’m a dog person, I like cats and well, fish are just fish.  My 8 year old son wanted a fish when we moved to our new house.  Occasionally I travel but not for extended times so having a fish was something we could do easily.  My son Christopher chose to name the fish Blue Moon because he is ALL blue.

We acquired a Beta Fish from PetSmart in Salem, MA.  I was not too thrilled with the purchase when we got him, it was one more task to the administrative maintenance of life cleaning the fish bowl and feeding Blue Moon on a daily basis.  So Blue Moon was relegated to the kitchen of the house on a high post of an inside wall overlooking the dining area.

Blue Moon was high up and out of the way.  He had a perch that surveyed 360 degrees of two rooms of my house.  We really could not see him much but we knew he was there.  Until one day I figured I could use some company in my home office and I moved Blue Moon to my desk.

He is really coming into his own now.  He sometimes dances in the water for me showing off his beautiful blue plum.  He sometimes shakes sideways and dances in the water and he really seems like he is having a lot of fun.  What I find most interesting is he is almost always on the same side of the bowl as I am.

Occasionally he will stare at me head on and wiggle backwards, kind of a strange movement.  But he does make eye contact with me and he does know I am here.  He does not like it when I drop my mouse on the mouse pad…. that seems to startle him.

When I feed him he thinks he is a great white shark when he goes after his little beta bites fish food.  He tends to grab his food than to tear it, since they are just little bits of pellets.

But overall he is a happy little fish.  I find him relaxing in some of my stress filled days and I think he enjoys being “closer to the action,” in his new home.  There is definitely a bond between Blue Moon and I and I think he is more intelligent than he let’s on.
