Why do I do what I do? Why did I choose the Internet space for a living? Why do I find it fascinating? Why do I love it? These are a few of the open ended questions that I will attempt to answer succinctly and authentically. Here goes.
Early in my career I was in the graphic arts, four color printing to be exact, web offset printing to be more specific, and to those that need to know the truth I was in the junk mail business. Yes sirree. Good old direct mail. I was ADD and ADHD long before it was fashionable and there were any labels attached to it. Now there are drugs for these conditions, but I don’t use them and never have. Back in the day (Early and Mid 1980′s) direct mail was equivalent to what the Internet is today. It was big and it was growing.
I had some large clients. I watched them. They tested small mailings. Many failed. A few succeeded. The ones that succeeded they did these huge “roll outs.” A “roll out” for me turned into a huge press run. Sometimes millions of pieces of brochures, magazine inserts, direct mail packages and coupons. After a dozen or so years the industry got more and more competitive and there were only so many ways you could fold and cut paper and attach perfume scents and scratch n sniff and die cuts to it. I saw the “writing on the wall.” We were just trading dollars for small margins.
I was fortunate to have an office right next door to some talented engineers freshly minted out of college. We started a small computer graphics and animation firm back in the day when morphing was big on MTV. We created digital images using Silicon Graphics Systems and 3-D modeling software. The Internet was gathering momentum. I saw the direct response potential. My partner and I split apart, he stayed with the graphics and animations and I went into the Internet. We even discussed going into the porn business back then but neither of us really had the passion to go down that route, but it probably would have been very lucrative. (Especially if you know how to manipulate images).
Here’s what I love about the Internet, it is just like fishing. Sometimes you get lucky sometimes you don’t. But after a while you learn how to navigate the treacherous Internet waters and specialize going after certain types of fish. You learn where they go, what they do, why they do it, when they do it and what they like to eat. And you track where they are and what they do and when they do it and you measure and do it again and again until they move, and you follow them and see if they want the same bait. Sometimes they do sometimes they don’t.
I left out a few details along the way and I’d be happy to fill you in but that was the short version, I can assure you it was not boring.
This is what I do.
